Indian Nurses Association of New York

Collaboration with other nursing associations and communities

Posted about 5 years ago by Jincy Chacko

INA-NY was represented at an event sponsored by International Council of Nurses and the Nightingale Initiative for global health. The event which was organized as part of the UN NGO CSW63 forum held in NYC between March 11-22, 2019, celebrated the nurse exemplars across the globe who made big changes in health care through simple nursing interventions. The event, moderated by Dr. Holly Shaw, Representative to the United Nations, International Council of Nurses (ICN) and Nightingale Initiative for Global Health, showcased the achievements of remarkable achievements of nurse leaders. Some examples are of the nurse who gave culturally competent care model to screen and treat Maori women afflicted with cervical cancer, the nursing student who created a program to provide post abortion care for Chinese women forced to have abortions as part of the governmental policies for population control and many more. It was eye opening to see how much the socio-economic factors that affect health have focus across the world through the eyes of the Pakistani activist working towards addressing the opioid crisis as well as re-settling sex workers in honorable professions as nursing assistants and mid-wives. The event ended on an inspiring note in honor of the legendary Lillian Wald, with an invitation to visit the Henry Street Settlement to celebrate the achievements of the nurse leader.
